Once a year thousands gather in the desert to create a wild utopian city, celebrate art, make any kind of statement imaginable, and then burn it in the end.
For seven days the Black Rock Desert becomes one of the largest cities in Nevada, and the largest contemporary art museum. Fifty thousand people fight against the elements (mostly blinding wind storms and extreme temperatures) and against their own pre-conceptions of the world.
This year over 100 art pieces dotted the "playa," the white flat expanse of desert where nothing grows and winds can reach over 80 km/h, covering everything with a fine white layer of alkali dust. Some say that art should not only be pleasant to the eyes, but also make one see things in a different way. Burning Man is like that. Your vision of what's possible is totally altered, thanks to the selfless contributions from others (there's no commerce here, only free giving), the unforgiving landscape and the art. Burning Man is about self-expression, for no sake other than its own.
